Using our Kubota tractor to pull our top-of-the-line Landoll Brillion Seeder, D. Breen Sod Farms is able to seed our fields efficiently during our prime planting season. This typically occurs between August 15th and September 15th each year. While fall is the best time to plant cool-season grass seed, spring can also be an option usually between April 1st and May 15th. The reason fall is the better time to plant is because the freezing temperatures of winter deter the growth of weeds. During spring, crabgrass is germinating which can invade newly planted beds.
The Brillion Seeder distributes an ample amount of our highest quality seed on our fields which have been carefully prepared and fertilized prior to planting to ensure excellent results. Before dropping seed, the seeder clears the dirt of any obstacles like small stones and rolls the dirt to create a perfect planting surface. Once the seeds are dropped, an additional cultipacking process completes this operation so seeds are securely deposited in the top half inch of soil. Since we program this seeder to provide a generous volume of seed to guarantee the sod we produce will be densely populated with thick, bountiful, rich green grass, you can rely on D. Breen to deliver the highest quality sod.
This
planting regimen requires that we monitor the outcome which will normally germinate in a week to 10 days, making sure the dirt remains moist. We use no herbicides to control weeds and other invasive growth because our planting beds are so well prepared that we can avoid that kind of environmental pollution.
As the cooler temperatures arrive during the ensuing months, the seedlings continue to grow into a thick lush carpet on our fields. We take the greatest care to irrigate and mow as needed, both of which strengthen the sod before winter arrives.
